Just bought lots more plants at Lowe's Clearance Plant Racks.  Gerber Daisy's .50 each ,  large petunia containers for $1 .  Also went to Big R and they were selling all of their flowers and vegetables for .25 to .50 each.  The sales lady even gave us 2 dozen tomato plants for FREE !!  


Going outside now to get all of these lovelies in the ground.

How to Grow Coleus Plants

Coleus are so beautiful !!  I grow these in my garden every year.  This plant offers incredibly colorful foliage in a variety of attractive shapes and sizes.

Growing Conditions:

Light: Bright light, avoiding direct midday sunlight. Too much sun will wash out the colors in their leaves.
Water: Keep soil continuously moist throughout the year, but reduce watering in winter. High humidity is preferred.
Temperature: Above 60ºF is preferred in the summer. In winter, above 50º is best.
Fertilizer: Feed in spring with slow-release pellets or weekly during growing season with liquid fertilizer.

Update: Egg Carton Seedlings Growing....

Well the Candy Lillies didn't grow.  Not too sure why.  However the Daisy's and Sunflowers did.  What I learned doing this, was not to start Tall seedlings in egg cartons.  So I will be transferring those into toilet paper rolls because they are taller.  I will post that tomorrow.  I have these egg cartons in our indoor green house.  Bought that on sale at a local hardware store for $19 last year.  Reg. $40 !

Spider Plant ~ Very Easy to Grow

The Spider Plant is characterized by its long shoots of thin foliage with off shoots at the ends of many of the leaves. The Spider plant's foliage is commonly known to be variegated with a white stripe, however some may have the white stripe to the outside or the foliage may be entirely green. The Spider Plant is one of the easiest houseplants to grow, as well as one of the easiest to reproduce.

A Petunia Tower...Love this idea!!

Here's a close up showing how the petunia tower was constructed. Basically, it's a ring of galvanized fencing lined with landscape fabric, then filled with potting soil. The petunias were planted through slits in the landscape fabric. This looks like a pretty easy do-it-yourself project! Courtesy of Better Homes & Gardens

The Snake plant is the ultimate for those without a green thumb. This house plant is one of the hardest to kill. A Snake plant contains heavy, sword-like leaves which shoot up from the base of the dirt. They will grow in a clump like style. Smaller shoots will eventually grow as well. Got Weeds? Use Vinegar, Not Roundup

I have a few dogs and I can't use Roundup or any of the other pesticides in our yard. But yes I do get weeds in my garden.

How to Apply: You can use a watering can, a spray bottle or a pump-sprayer to apply cheap, undiluted, store-brand white Vinegar. Be sure to rinse your sprayer after use, or metal parts (if any) can corrode.  Make your application on a sunny, calm (not windy) day. Vinegar is not selective; use caution when applying to weeds which grow in lawn grass. Be careful not to spray on any plants you dont want to kill.  Try it and give me feedback !!!

Lowe's Home Improvement Clearance Plants

Since Spring is starting for some sooner than others, I have to share a secret.  (Some may already know this one ;-) Every Spring/Summer, I shop at Lowe's outdoor plant clearance racks.  I LOVE them! I find plants there that are a bit wilted, soil is dry, no flowers, etc.  Plant vendors come in and pull these types of plants off the main stock because they are "not sellable".  However, Lowe's puts them on clearance at 50% to 90% off. These plants have lots of life in them, just need a little TLC.  Lowe's just doesn't have the time to give them.  So their loss is your gain.  I have found Hibiscus trees there for $5 marked down from $30.  Bought 4 last year and they are still growing strong.  Also found nice rose bushes for $2.50 marked down from $30.  Marigolds, Impatiens and Geraniums 6pks between .10 - .25 down from $6 a pack. Planter of 6 Gerber plants for $2 down from $14. I have only had one plant die that I have bought from these racks. 

I could go on and on, but you get the point.  If you don't have Lowe's, then check your local Home Improvement store.  Please let me know what deals you have found.  I would love to see them too.

Use Egg Carton to Start Seeds indoors Cheap & Easy!

Fill Cartons with Seeding Soil, 
Spray with water (I added too much water)

Label the inside lid and add 1 - 3 seeds 
per "egg" section

Close lids and add Names on outside. 
Store in water proof container.
Spray with water once in a while.

When they sprout, cut out the individual cups and plant them directly in your garden. You only need to keep the seeds in the egg crates until they sprout, and then you can cut the individual cups out and put them in the ground where you want them to grow. Or transfer to a bigger container. I will be having a plant sale, so I will transfer these over to larger containers to continue to grow for a while. And some I will plant into the ground.

The cardboard of the egg carton will decompose on its own, so no need to take individual plants out of them. I will update on my seedlings, as soon as they start sprouting. ;-)
