Garden Wednesdays: Queen Anne's Lace

This is one of my absolutely favorite wildflowers. I remember while gardening with my father, he pointed this out to me and I have loved it ever since. They are just so delicate and beautiful.

Queen Anne's Lace is actually a wild carrot and can be eaten in early Spring.  Also has other distinct herbal remedies. It has been said to have been named after Queen Anne of England, an expert lace maker.  When she pricked her finger with a needle, a single drop of blood fell into the lace, thus the dark purple/burgundy floret in the center of the flower. With "lace" looking petals around it.

Scientific Name: Daucuscarota
Common Name: Queen Anne’s Lace, wild carrot
Range: A native of Europe and western Asia, it was brought to America by the early colonists, and is now throughout the United States; found in fields, meadows, waste places, roadsides, fence rows, and disturbed habitats
Botanical description: Queen Anne’s Lace has feathery, finely divided leaves and a stem that rise 2-4 feet tall.  The showy white flower is shaped like an umbrella and is made up of many small flowers in a lace-like pattern.  At the center is a purplish-black floret. The root of Queen Anne’s Lace is thick and resembles a carrot.

There is a deadly similar plant called Hemlock.  Easiest way to determine the difference is to break a piece of the leave and rub it between your fingers to see if it smells like carrots.  Also, the stem of Queen Anne's Lace is hairy and not smooth like Hemlock.

Garden Wednesdays: Catalpa Trees

 

I was just introduced to this amazing tree this weekend at our yard sale.  A gentleman came by and we talked about the plants I have in several of my Flower Gardens out front and he mentioned this tree to me.  After looking it up on the internet, I had to go and find one.  Come to find out we drive by several everyday.  

Simply amazing.  The Catalpa Tree ......

Garden Wednesdays: Lowe's Clearance Plant Racks

Awhile back I posted about Lowes Clearance Plant Racks.

Today I went and bought my first round of goodies.  Just by looking at the pictures, you might be thinking. They're dead or dying!!  Actually they aren't.  Some are very dry from not being watered. Some have not had the spent flowers removed. They will all bounce back.  There is still a lot of life in these pretty plants. The following 3 pictures are  when we were loading the car at Lowe's.

Next pics are when I got home and show you how much they cost..........  drum roll please

Gardening Wednesdays: Bulbs & Seeds

So much Gardening to do....

...where do I begin???? This is just what I have to begin with for my flower gardens.  Only 4 of which I paid full price for. 
(a little late on Gardening Wednesdays sorry)

I wait until the season clearance to purchase bulbs for the next year.  Especially the Dahlia's because they go dormant during winter.  Everyone of these tubers have started to grow and I need to get them in the ground.  My dad grew Dahlia's when I was a kid and I just love them. These are the BIG ones too.

I haven't purchased seeds on clearance for the next planting season. However, I did last year and I will see how these do.

Spider Plant ~ Very Easy to Grow

Common Name: Spider Plant
Name: Chlorophytum comosum 'Vittatum'
Growing Conditions: Medium to bright light; 60-75 degrees F.; keep the soil evenly moist
Size: To 1 foot tall and 2 feet wide

The Spider Plant is characterized by its long shoots of thin foliage with off shoots at the ends of many of the leaves. The Spider plant's foliage is commonly known to be variegated with a white stripe, however some may have the white stripe to the outside or the foliage may be entirely green. The Spider Plant is one of the easiest houseplants to grow, as well as one of the easiest to reproduce.
